Beykoz British community

Beykoz was a small village on the Asian side of the Bosphorus near its opening northern opening to the Black Sea. The resident British community at the time was probably tiny and it seems some ex-sailors saw an opportunity to open drinking establishments probably for the considerable passing trade that were British sailors, travellers and no doubt some Levantines enjoying the clean air of this zone that also featured its own cricket ground during the first decades of the 20th century.

A beer garden that appears to be run by a proud British ex-sailor.

St James Bar & Garden in Beykoz main street advertising itself as ‘entirely British management’.
