The now abandoned Rasim Palas Hotel, formerly frequented by wealthy Levantines and prominent visitors included Ataturk. The building was sold by the family from Manisa who owned it, who were suffering losses, around 2006. It now stands derelict.

The nearby former Clarke house, gradually turning to dust, also awaiting demolishing before developers create something new. Click image above to reveal the results to date of the project to record the ownership history of houses of Yıldızburnu, run by Brian and Mark Giraud. Explanation and invitation to participate:

There has recently been a lot of interest in the history of the houses of Yıldızburnu in Ilıca, near Izmir. The idea behind our current project is to provide a platform onto which people may contribute information in a more organised fashion. We hope that this will avoid too much confusion in the future.

In old photographs and letters ‘Yildizburnu’ as it is now known is referred to as the Whittall Terrace. The terrace is situated on a small point of land in the middle of a wide bay facing north, about 5km east of the village of Çesme and 70 km west of Izmir.

It is interesting to note that nearly all the houses on the terrace can trace their history back to James Whittall (1819-1883) who was the son of Charlton Whittall (1791-1867): the first Whittall to come to Izmir (then Smyrna) in 1809 at the age of 18.

James had 13 children and 86 grandchildren. Most of these grandchildren will by now have produced 4 or 5 generations of offspring themselves. Thus the number of descendents increased exponentially. My father’s great grandfather was one of his grandchildren. Many spent their summers in ‘Lydja’. It is therefore no wonder that the terrace was known as the Whittall Terrace.

I have attached to this email a panorama of Yildizburnu. You will find that each house is encircled and numbered with its street number as it stands today. Under each is an explanation of its history known to us.

We would welcome and indeed invite any corrections or additional information, so long as it comes from a reliable source. I will try and keep up with your suggestions by updating the picture as often as possible. The current attached picture is labelled V1; each subsequent update will be labelled as V2, V3 and so on.

Perhaps the most efficent way to discuss any further information would be for you to post it as a comment on the blog that has been set up for this purpose, to which a link is displayed below.
