The city was able to grow seawards better than landwards as the coastal plain is relatively narrow. The draining of the marshes was commisioned to French engineers in the 1860s (the Smyrna quay company) who also reorganised the chaoticly arranged European quarter which now could lay out a promenade and a tram service
