The church of Saint Vlassios at Kampos, Chios of the Zygomalas family of Chios (within the property of the Chandris family). The brass ornements within are gifts of the Baltazzi family with the name S. Baltazzi in greek visible in one picture who should be Spiridon Baltazzi (1826-1867) son of Emmanuel. According to the book in Greek of Dimitrios Kokinakis (Mihail Zygomalas enas archontas tu Kambou ke tis Chios), Michael Zygomalas son of Theodoro and Despina Galati was born in Chios in 1809 and around 1822 the family left for Trieste but Michael returned to Chios in 1833 and started a big trade with Russian grain to the Mediterranean ports. He married in Syros 1849 Arietta Kalamari and they had 6 children. He became one of the most influent persons of Chios with a trade expansion to all important ports and cities of the Mediterranean and the Black sea. In Manchester his company was called Stavert Zigomala Co. Manchester. He was in cooperation with the Rallis and the Baltazzi company of Odessa which was according Kokinakis one of the biggest between 1833-1892. In addition both the Zygomalas and Baltazzi were relatives (should be through all the Chiot families endogamy such as Galati - Mavrokordato etc.). Zygomalas was also one the biggest shipowners of this period. He was assasinated in Chios by a ship trader captain called capt. Nicolas Skandalis the 2nd november 1885 due to a trade dispute. |
