Situated in the Izmir Archaeological Museum, masonry with the coats-of-arms of Genoa, pointing to their port castle of Neon Kastron (called St. Peter by the Genoese and as ‘Ok Kalesi’ by the Turks), that protected the harbour during the Middle Ages. The Genoese lost the castle for good when Tamerlane in 1402 expelled them after his victory over the Ottomans in the battle of Ankara.
The marble insignia are from two Knights of the Order of the Knights of St. John (Knights Hospitaller): on the left, Ferdinand de Heredia, Grand Master of the Order from 1376 to 1396 (origin Spanish, died Rhodes) and on the right of Admiral Domenico d’Allemagna (origin Italy) - insignia information courtesy of Petros Mechtidis.
