The former Icard Pharmacy in Smyrna, though established in the 19th century, this photo seems to point to a post 1922 survival from style of dress of people. In addition the photo doesn’t look like the Rue Franque on which the pharmacy was traditionally based, it could be the address of the main office in the Nicolas Aliotti Lokali, Selvili Han Sokak. The Icard family is French and came from La Ciotat near Marseille.
Jacques Icard - ancestor of all the Icard of Smyrna was a tailor, born in La Ciotat before 1700. He married a woman from Syra - presumably Greek- whose first name was Anna.
One of his sons: Joseph Icard was “Vicaire apostolique” of Smyrna.
The first to be a pharmacist was Jean Baptiste Icard (born May 1st 1797 in Smyrna, died January 21st 1854). He married Elisabeth Maggiar and they had several children. He is burried in the Saint Polycarpe church in Izmir.
The Icard brothers founded in 1814 a company with two main activities: Import-Export branch handling different chemical products, mainly opium and the second one dealing only with medical products including a pharmacy in the Rue Franque. In the “Annuaire Cervati” of 1881 la Pharmacie des frères Icard called “L’horloge” [the clock] was located on 16 Rue Franque in Smyrna. However the 1920 Almanac “Métiers de Smyrne” placed the drugstore on Rue France no: 25 and the pharmacie Rue France no: 36 opposite the restaurant l´Abeille.
