Photo taken in the 1930s Konak, Pasaport area, the former City Gas building, that was later to become the ‘Istanbul hotel’, before it became derelict and now in a precarious condition. Images to show urban decay in Izmir even afflicts some prime shore-front property in the centre of town. This building may have been the ‘Hotel Constantinople’ of pre 1922 owned by K. And I. Charitou, as listed in an old Greek guide of the city.

This building was possibly one of the survivors of the 1922 fire.
