St Sophia Greek Orthodox church of Trabzon, 1966

The church was used as a military warehouse and converted to a Mosque. The frescoes were thankfully painted over with whitewash and not destroyed. It was later on converted to a museum and the frescoes restored (1957-62). That was its state when I took the photos in 1966. Recently, the present political rulers have re-converted it to a Mosque (2013).
