Le Journal d’Orient segments of issues from the 1930s, with small inserts in English for news concerning the Anglo-Levantine community. One of the principal writers in this publication in this period was Willy Sperco, who sometimes used his pen name of ‘Jean de Peyrat’. Le Journal d’Orient is newspaper intended primarly for the Levantine community of Izmir and this date of publications shows it to be possibly the last of its kind to continue to within living memory.
At present the identity of the author of this series of articles, A.G. Galizzi, is bit of a mystery. However we see in the ‘Index des registres des baptemes of 1814-1988 of Chios’ (Marmara - Chio) a Isidoro Gallici son of Giorgio, in addition a Galizzi in a Pera - Galata trade listing. In the 1854 Sardinian Consular listing of property ownership of their citizens, there is the entry of Galizzi Brothers. The recently published book, ‘Les Levantins O.J.Schmitt’, a Galizzi is listed amongst Levantine priests of 1803 - research courtesy of Alex Baltazzi, 2008.
