WW1 Photo Postcard showing Hauptmann Hans-Joachim Buddecke of the Flieger Abteilung 5 and famous German Aviator of WW1 and winner of the highest German WW1 Aviation Award the “Blue Max” which he is wearing in the photo. This circa 1918 German postcard is a “Second Generation Copied Postcard” from the original “Sanke” series of German cards depicting famous German aviators of WW1. Hauptmann Buddecke began his aviation career in 1914 flying Fokker Eindeckers with FFA 23. He was then transferred to the Balkans and joined FA 6, returned briefly to France in 1916 to command Jasta 4 before joining the Ottoman FA 5 back in the Middle East. In this photo Buddecke is shown wearing his Turkish officers uniform with the lambswool kalpak headgear of the Turkish Aviation Service with the badge of the Turkish Aviation Service on his hat. He is wearing his “Blue Max” at his collar and his 1914 Iron Cross First Class. Buddecke's uniform has the distinctive collar which was red in color and he retains his shoulder boards from his German uniform. His German Iron Cross is between his Turkish War Medal and a Turkish Flying Badge.
